First Timers Guide

Welcome! Here’s everything you need to know for your first blues dance festival

What is Blues Dancing?

Blues dance is a family of dances that developed alongside and is danced to blues music. It emphasizes connection with your partner, musicality, and personal expression. Whether slow and intimate or fast and playful, blues dancing is accessible to dancers of all levels.

Do I Need Experience?

Not at all! SBDF welcomes complete beginners. Our Starter Pass includes a bootcamp designed specifically for newer dancers. Even if you’ve never danced before, you’ll learn the fundamentals and be ready to social dance by the first party.

Which Pass Should I Choose?

Starter Pass — Best for beginners. Includes a bootcamp plus all parties
Full Workshop Pass — For intermediate+ dancers who want the full workshop experience
Full Party Pass — For those who primarily want to social dance

Practical Tips

• Wear comfortable, smooth-soled shoes (avoid rubber/grip soles)
• Bring multiple shirts — you will sweat!
• Use deodorant and stay fresh
• Hydrate between dances
• Don’t be shy — everyone is friendly and welcomes new dancers
• It’s okay to say no to a dance — and okay to hear no
